Photo of the day

@RPATCH test paddling a wood strip prototype of a new Savage River 14' solo canoe, tentatively named the Shenandoah, on a Mullica River water prairie on October 6, 2026. This prototype had adjustable gunwale width so as to adjust the rocker. It also had a bottom-mounted bucket seat, which could be sat-upon or kneeled-off, slid fore and aft, and raised or lowered in the front or back to adjust the height and cant angle. Feedback was provided to the Savage River team by several paddlers (including yours truly) on different rivers and a lake this week in the New Jersey Pine Barrens.

Misty Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park, where the Petawawa River flows into the west end of Misty. Taken on 9/28/26 during that 'golden hour' of special ambient light just before dark. The leaves were at their peak colours and the weather was just about perfect. Highs in the low to mid 60's F and lows in the upper 40's to lower 50's F. The only rain we experienced was at the very end of the trip. IMG_0751.JPEG

Is that a profile of a bison on photo #2?

I was working a SAR incident a month ago in the Adirondacks. i have never seen so many and so many varieties of mushrooms as I was walking through then. Unfortunately, no time to stop to photo them while on the search. Wish I knew off hand which ones were edible, or not.

The mushroom in the second picture is an "Admirable Bolete".

Rivière Dumoine, Quebec
Duration: 7 days including 1 layover

In 2003 I met these guys online and replaced Dave (orange canoe) for a Moisie River trip (last trip I did in a tandem boat). Since then I've done many river trips with them although they have rarely been for more than 5 or 6 days. I hope to do some long trips if their obstacles of family and jobs ever allows for it before I am unable.

For this trip they showed up with 3 brand new Pocket Canyon's. I paddled my battered yellow Mohawk XL14, it developed a significant leak during the last 3 days, not anything serious but every hourly smoke break included a sponging session.

Here are a few fall foliage shots over the last three days.

This is Meadow Lake, my home lake. Most of the Maples have lost there leaves.

This was on the upper Lehigh River in Thornhurst Pa, taken shortly after emptying the water out of my boots after a mishap climbing a small drop with a pole.

Brady's Lake. I combined a paddle and a bike ride this day and was happy to find an extensive trail network (logging roads) there. I found a shortcut to bike from my house to Brady's on trails, with only having to cross one paved road.

I dunno if this fits, but here's an image that will help get me through the winter. . . 😁
Congrats on the new Blackwater. You will love it. This was my second season with mine, which I absolutely love. Fast and highly stable, much more stable than my PB Shadow, both with a higher than standard custom elevated seat. Even without any rocker, it turns tight in buoy turns with an onside heel. Tracks perfectly straight with a slight offside heel while single blading for unlimited distance constant single side paddling. Rudder is not necessary, glad I do not have one. Short custom carbon gunwale blocks were glued in place to attach my existing wood carry yoke clamps. My BW is absolutely my go to fast training canoe.
