My paddling (?) partner (obsessed with photographing loons), canoe designer, paddle maker and freestyle instructor, Marc Ornstein, at the put-in of Boreas Ponds in the Adirondacks, NY.



I forgot to post my on-lake photos in the Boreas Ponds thread, which I shall now do shortly. Marc and I both agreed that it's the most scenic and all-around enjoyable lake we've paddled in the Adirondacks.

I was in my canoe on the river between Long Lake and Tully Reservoir in Royalston, Massachusetts, yesterday when I stopped among the pickerelweed to take a picture of some painted turtles sunning themselves on a log, and I noticed a black bear climbing onto a beaver lodge across the river.

At the end of August, I returned to Maine, Lake Damariscota and Camp Kieve, for its 100th anniversary celebration. A camp for boys, with a focus on wilderness tripping, I learned to paddle and canoe trip there as a camper in the ‘90s, and the experience changed my life. I was a counselor in 2001 for the 75th celebration and I attended this centennial event with my boys, who are now campers. The camp espouses courage, perseverance and loyalty as its primary tenets. It challenges boys to push themselves and to grow thereby; and there’s something aspirational about the place that seems wonderfully, and perhaps sadly, old fashioned.



I was up before the bell one morning and snapped this picture of a canoeist chaperoning some alum in the midst of “the island swim,” a quarter-mile swim that served as the culmination of a series of swimming challenges, or “Qualifications,” that a camper might achieve over the course of their summer. You can’t see him because his head is underwater, but you can locate him by way of the ripples.
