• Happy National Eggnog Day! 🎄🥛😵

Photo of the day

Made it out today. What a treat after an unusually wintry November when December is usually pretty good for paddling in southern Michigan. I tried to coach the cormorant into going around me but no, it just kept swimming ahead of me (underwater).

Looks like a cozy little workspace.

It is. We moved to Maine to be near our daughter during Covid, it was a tough time to move as there were few homes for sale. My wife loved this house we found, I was on the fence till I saw the single car garage added to the side of the oversized 2 car garage. After some insulation with pine walls, and heat, its a great little shop, Especially since I spend more time tinkering around canoes than in them these days.

André, does the lake ever freeze to ice?

The lake hasn't frozen over completely for decades; the last time this happened was in the winter of 1962/63 (I was just a toddler then). It's possible that in very cold winters, the shallower shoreline areas or the "shipping channels" freeze over, as shown in the picture above.
This gives me the opportunity to paddle more or less all year round.
In recent years, it has become a tradition for me to take a day paddling trip on the last day of the year and the first day of the new year.
Right now the weather forecast looks like that will be possible again.

That jogged fond memories of traditional New Year’s Day paddles on my local central Ohio river with a group of fellow fanatics. Sometimes pretty icy paddles by the end, sometimes breaking shallow ice to continue. Ahhh memories…

Celebrated Yule on the solstice, and much anticipating Christmas, in our own particular way. Hogmanay to follow before Imbolg...
Bought a tree to continue that tradition, and have been disappointed to find the branches, while soft and supple to inquisitive gkids' hands,
do not support all the ju, sorry, adornments, my wife likes to load on the branches. Did manage some wildlife and weirdness.
May you all embrace the seasons and find some Peace.

gumpus, when I saw your photo I immediately thought Lake Michigan. My view at Lake Michigan is just like yours but I am looking from Racine WI toward Michigan.
I was born in Highland Park. IL and we used to go to all the local beaches just south of you on our bikes as kids. We lived near Fort Sheridan.
