Belleville’s Pop-Ups on the Bay was the chosen location to launch a new Canadian canoe — designed and manufactured in Ontario — on the choppy waters of the Bay of Quinte Friday morning.

“Belleville’s location on the Bay of Quinte makes it the perfect place to launch the canoe and celebrate Canadian paddling,” said Mark Schwartz, owner of Venture Outfitters and Expedition Toys. “We’ve had a great summer here at Pop-Ups on the Bay and we love Belleville’s abundance of public waterfront and easy water access.”

The first two of the canoes, designed and produced by Ottawa-based Venture Outfitters in partnership with Ontario designer Andy Phillips, were unveiled at the Pop-Ups site in West Zwick’s Park with Councillors Sean Kelly and Pat Culhane and Schwartz taking one of them out for a paddle.

“We’re very excited about the launch of this new Ontario-designed and manufactured canoe and I’m super happy it’s being launched at Pop-Ups on the Bay in Belleville, said Anne Munro, the city’s development and tourism coordinator. “I’ve heard about this canoe for a while and Mark has been excitedly talking about all summer, and we thought this is perfect, this canoe at this place at this time in this very interesting summer, it’s perfect.”

“I’m happy to take part in the launch of a new product that I understand has taken considerable time and planning and work to bring to this position today,” said Culhane. “And I’ll further announce that I’m going to conquer my own fears and get in it and go out on the bay with canoe instructor Councillor Kelly.”

Kelly noted the success of Pop-Ups on the Bay and applauded Schwartz for bringing the canoes to the city.

“Belleville is a city of innovation and recreation and we welcome this product launch on our shores,” said Karen Poste, manager of economic and strategic initiatives for the City of Belleville.

The canoe combines traditional canoe design with state-of-the-art composite material and a special coating developed for use in the aviation industry. The design is based on traditional Indigenous canoes — the type used by many of the first settlers. It’s tall and narrow on the front and back to cut through the water, and low and wide in the middle to carry a load and give it stability.

“We’ve been working on this design of this Prospector-style, it’s basically an Explorer canoe, for the past couple of years. We’ve done some really neat things,” Schwartz said. “What makes this canoe so special is that we have taken a design developed on Canadian waters and for travelling with a family and gear, and we have recreated it using these fantastic new materials and the very best quality composites, resins and paints.”

Venture Outfitters is collaborating with Phillips to design and manufacture the canoes. Phillips has worked in the aeronautical and automotive industries. Based in Vanastra, Ontario, he has previous experience designing canoes.

Friday, Schwartz and Phillips launched two versions of the canoe, one made of a Kevlar composite which is light and very durable, and the second in a carbon composite which is slightly heavier and even more durable. Both versions are coated with a material that was developed for use in the aeronautical industry.

“It’s recently been used for cruise ships but this is the first time it’s been used on canoes,” said Schwartz. The coating reduces drag, making the vessel more efficient.

Schwartz said he has already received inquiries about the new canoes from Europe. “They are very excited. They know Canadians know how to build canoes.”
