How much have you paddled this year?

I really prioritize outdoor time and find that the older I get, the more I require it for mental health.

This has been my finding as well and many times drove me to get up early on weekends to get in some paddling, even if I had to be back for afternoon/evening plans, etc. I find I’m just able to deal with the work week so much better when I’ve been out on a river with some solitude, even if just for a few hours a week.

30 miles a week x 30 weeks=900 miles give or take in 2025

This would be living the dream though!

My sorta goal is to paddle around every other day on average...so 5-6 times/week in the best weather and lucky to do any paddling in January. Just day paddles. I think I partly don't want to feel like I stop, I want to stay connected to paddling (and nature). This year I'm happy to be paddling with a dog again and more focused on time on the water than miles, but as far as miles go I'll just say watch out for retired guys cause I think I've got you covered.

While this year was much better than last year I would still rate it as feeble.......

28 days on the water (includes a few layover days)
349km (217 miles)

When I turned 60 I decided to aim for a number of days at least equal to my age, for 6 years I either made my goal or came very close. It's been downhill since then for various reasons.

I have spent quite a bit of time at Jesse Owen’s State Park but mostly when it was known as AEP and Ohio Power. Be aware that pretty much all the lakes are actually ponds. Most can be paddled in 15-30 minutes. Wear hunter orange if hiking. Lots of bow hunters down there right now.
Beautiful area. Enjoy.
Thank you.

My dad and grandpa took me down to what we called Ohio power when I was very small. It was where I learned to fish and handle the stern. Also where I landed a snapping turtle! We made soup.

This will be my first time back in about 40 years. We plan on portaging around into some of the ponds away from the roads. Looking forward to it!

A conservative estimate for me this year would be around 350 to 500 miles. I try to take a morning paddle of at least 3 miles and usually get out again throughout the day for another couple miles. I try to get out every chance I can to make up for all the years I worked almost 70 hours a week during paddling season. I feel that if I was able show up for work every day I owe it to myself to show up for play.

Not as much as I would like. I got only one trip in with my son and a bunch of day paddling. I did explore some new water and the new carbon Keewaydin did make life easier. Looking forward to some more tripping next year.

It is a little early to be coming up with year-end totals – there are still a couple of months to go. ;)

I don’t track miles, but I do keep track of all my trips. So far this year I’ve done 42 trips with 15 flatwater, 13 whitewater, 11 sea kayak and 3 tripping. My 10-year average is 54 trips/year. I got a slow start in January and February due to a death in the family, so I’ll be below that average this year. Estimated miles is around 330. 10 nights out camping.

I do have objectives – they don’t really change year-over-year.

Keep practicing with my new sea kayak – I need to get out on more level 3 trips (defined by my local club as 15 knt winds, 2-3 foot waves, surf and beach landings)

I did get out in my sea kayak, but it was pretty much all in protected waters during my summer vacation. I didn’t really get out in any open-water or exposed conditions.

Do more camping – I’d like to get back to the Allagash, or maybe the St. Croix or the Bonaventure, or the Maine Island Trail in my kayak.

Still working, so this one is kind of tough. I did get out for a spring trip on the on the Baskahegan, and a fall trip on the Allagash. We usually do an overnight on a local river the weekend between Christmas and New Years, so I may get out for one more night. I’d love to get to the St. Croix next year, and do some camping on the Maine Island Trail in my sea kayak.

Keep paddling whitewater - as long as my knee holds up.

Did a fair amount of whitewater paddling, and purchased a new boat – Millbrook Outrage.

Get back to the Dead – always a great trip.

Finally got back for a run on the Dead – first time back since COVID. It was a blast.

Practice rolling – I’ll keep including it until I do it – maybe in the sea kayak.

Didn’t do this one, and never do. Maybe I am just getting too old. ;)

I‘ll get a few more trips in before the end of the year, but we really do need some rain.
