I have used these forums a lot when planning our North American trips, and thought I would take the leap and finally register. I’m American but have lived over here for 22 years now. These things happen when you marry a German girl and start having kids.

Germany has a number of pretty little rivers that are fun to explore with a canoe. There’s no wilderness though—for that we have to travel. It’s not something we can do on a regular basis. So I also enjoy coming on to the forum every now and then and reading travel reports for a bit of escapism. I‘ll do my best to return the favor soon.

Picked the name FamilyPaddler because I’m blessed to have a wife and 3 kids (now all young adults) who up till now have enjoyed coming along on my trips.

If you haven’t already, connect with Kahel, a very active member on this board and a fellow resident of Germany.

And welcome to this most interesting bunch of paddlers.

Welcome to the campfire FamilyPaddler. Pull up a stump and throw another log on the fire. Looking forward to hearing some of your adventures.

We‘ve done bits and pieces of it, but not a lot given how close we are. Have been toying with the idea of starting in Marburg and finally doing the whole thing to the end. Probably a year when the kids aren’t available since that might not qualify as “adventure” in their eyes.

The Lahn gets busy. What time of year was your tour?

Oh, yes - there's a lot going on on the Lahn.
Especially in summer. There are lots of “rental companies” out with their groups...
We did our tour in August – right in the middle of the season. But since we started the tour very high up and then during the week... we didn't see too many of the rental companies on our way to the end point in Wetzlar after 60 km.
