Wilderness Express AKA Chestnut Pal

An old thread, but time to update. The Pal solo was fiberglassed and sanded on the outside, and we popped it off the form the other day.

Interior sanding started last week. Looks like it is going to be a very nice solo. Meanwhile,my canoe building class is taking off, the kids are really into the 20 foot build. First thing they did was thickness plane 400 board feet cedar.

I stripped it up, as I had to take the guard off the table saw to get the required 1/4 inch, so Elmar the Safety Elephant declared it off limits for kids. However, they did a bang up job bead and coving the strips.

After that they glued up the stems.

Then installed the stems and filed the bevels for the strips.

From there, stripping began on both sides until we cut the centre line. Hoping to have the entire canoe planked by the end of this week. The Pal strong back is open now too, so we will be setting up forms for another canoe, probably a 17 footer, undecided yet as to what pattern.

We have made a lot of progress in three weeks, as long as the funding comes through for the fibreglass, the Outers club should have three new canoes ready for Spring Trip this year in June.
