Spruce Bark Canoe

There are many historical accounts of making canoes out of elm bark. This was usually south of where birch were found. Unfortunately, due to Dutch Elm disease, elms don't get big enough to make a boat out of any more. I always wondered if the put the rough bark side in to smooth the outer hull.

James Dina spoke years ago at Maine Canoe Symposium about the Voyage of the Ant. As I recall the Ant was made of elm. You can buy the book on Amazon for seven cents or nearly a thousand dollars..:eek:
