Starting to replace the gunwales (with Ash) and add new cane seats to my OT canoe but not sure what would be the best finish for the ash and/or the cane. Some people say not to put any type of sealer finish on the cane as it needs to breathe. But when you purchase a ready made seat they come with a polyurethane finish. Also I would like to add a small storage compartment in the bow. What is the best epoxy or fiberglass resin to use on Royalex?

When I re-cane seats I finish the top with a couple coats of quality varnish, usually Epifanes and leave the bottom untouched so it can breathe.

The ash rails can be finished with varnish or Watco oil. I like the oil but it requires you to be vigilant and keep after it. It will look better with age if you keep after it.
Not sure about cain, I never varnished it but I see the logic in Mihun09's way.
Not sure about the storage compartment. G-Flex is pretty good, but I wouldn't try to mold a compartment into a flexible canoe. A repair patch yes.
