Photo of the day

I like those stands!
They sure make refinishing the gunwales easier, as you can stand up under the boat and the oil doesn't run down the hull. Got a good bit in my hair though, from bumping my head on the gunwales and not ducking enough.

I can't take credit for the design though; I copied them from an earlier post by @Jim Dodd.

Good looking bear. This must be the year of the bear. Our family has been seeing them almost every week all year. Several trophy size. Got this one on trail cam.

We have a lot of bears on the Long Beach Peninsula in Washington. They do seem to be very active right now. Two nights ago one scaled and bent down the fence around our garden area to get to our garbage can. I now need to find another solution for garbage.
These two have also been hanging around the neighborhood lately. My Wife took this picture last week.

There does seem to be a lot of bears around this year. Maybe because they are having more cubs than normal. This photo was posted on fb. It was taken a few miles down the road from me. You can clearly see six cubs with a possible seventh in front of the mother. The most I’ve seen was four. A black bear and more rare a grizzly.

Finally got back out on the water for the first time since tearing my rotator cuff last summer, and only the second paddle in the boat since I got and restored it. This is Little Long Pond (Lake Kanawauke) in NY's Harriman State Park. Up until 1980 or so, there was a Girl Scout camp with a dock going out to the rock just ahead and a big tent on the island, but like many of the old camps in the park it's gone now, just the beavers live there now.

I let the boat drift into the weeds to stabilize it while getting out the camera.

Early morning at Huntington State Park in Redding, CT, with Loba, aboard my newly restored 15’ Kennebec Charles River, made in 1910.
Mark and Andy from Itchy Dog Boatworks in Sterling, NY remade new gunwale caps, fixed a few broken ribs, replaced the main thwart, sanded and revarnished the wood, put on a new canvas, removed the keel, and repainted the hull. They did a fabulous job…

This canoe paddles so well! A sublime experience on the water…

A few shots of the Nantucket Outriggers launching one of their boats. You can read a bit more about these boats here:

Amazingly, the six-seat boats only weigh 168 lbs. Absolute rocket ships.
