The last moments of Summer in SW MI. Monday was the last sunny, hot, dry day of a long heat wave. Still in the 80s when I took the pic of the moon at 8 pm and 15 minutes later Fall arrived and it started raining.

In October 2025 in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, open canoes paddle through a canopy tunnel of coloring leaves and then disappear into the marsh grass of a low-water lake.

Came across this little guy and thought it looked exotic. My snake expert brother-in-law said it was just a baby Black Ratsnake (aka Central or Midland Ratsnake). They are pure black as adults and get quite a bit bigger.

Baby water snakes (Nerodia spp.) and racers have similar patterns. They all darken with age.

Look, I brought you something... it's quite old, and I don't think they make it anymore.
He had bought this box in America more than 30 years ago...

Poland Pond and Stream in northern Maine on a recent visit in early October. Wild cranberry was abundant and perfectly
ripe in the boggy edges along the route. They were a delicious treat.

I love Poland Pond. I've been to that beach with my daughter, and we paddled up that inlet. We camped on the island and worked on the Kamana for Kids workbook - a course for teaching kids how to be more aware of nature. Good memories.

Robin, I was inspired to put Poland Pond on my bucket list after reading your trip report (https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/poland-pond-north-maine-woods.118112/#post-135525) and watching the video you made about it when you were there in 2020. It took me five years, but I got there, and it was worth it. Thank you! Interestingly, when I was camping on Lobster Lake in 2024, a Maine Forest Ranger visited me. When I asked him about Poland Pond, he said he was not familiar with it. He had to look it up on the map app on his phone. It must not be visited very often, as the access road to it was nearly overgrown.
