proper cat hole shovel

I use a stick. If I was tripping in hard or rocky soil I'd take a metal shovel but for where I've been in northern Canada it's easy enough with a stick.

I normally use a stick, but rarely carry a Coughlin's trowel like the one illustrated above... I cut about an inch off it though, to make it smaller and lighter, but rediscovered that a stick was lighter still.

When I travel solo, I am rarely if ever at a designated site with either an outhouse, or even a thunder box privy. Most times my boot heel suffices, along with a stick in more compacted ground. I have one of those orange plasstic trowels and slso the metal variety I carry when with others, such as scouts or when training guides on the proper LNT procedures.
