Anyone familiar with these? My biggest concern is being able to press the thing while in the canoe. Maybe it would be the perfect mechanics hunched over with the thing between your feet?

No experience with that sort of filter. I've always just used a Sawyer filter bottle with a straw. Fill and suck. Simple and easy. Takes a couple weeks for it to restrict to the point it needs to be backflushed, which is easy enough to do in the field.

Thanks Alan. The three last "fill & suck" types I've used gave us troubles on a (2-week max) trip. The last 2 were suck-or-squeeze bags and both were hard on the cheeks and/or hands & awfully slow. Never had a Sawyer so will look into those. I'll take a look at that old thread just mentioned. I did do a search prior to posting this with no hits for whatever reason so if you can share that old post I'll take a look.

Thank You

I had one and tossed it. I used it in the BWCA and two presses and the filter was clogged. My son, not to be deterred, sat on it and got nothing. When we got home I tried to call them through the 800 number on the packaging and could never get through, I think I might have left a message but I’m not sure, if I did I never got a call back. The store I bought it from no longer carries them.

I have two. Don't use them in tannin-stained water, or water with any sort of turbidity. They filter exceptionally well, and and meet the end of their service life exceptionally fast.

For any water in any condition, I ponied up in cost and weight to an MSR Guardian. Might be an option for you, since the weight of the Grayl didnt turn you off.

Otherwise, Sawyer Squeeze has been a mainstay in our group, and we have never had an issue other than one was stored in a hot minibarn uncovered, which dried out the fibers. It never fully recovered the original flow rate, but it was entirely serviceable after an overnight soak.

Thanks for all the help. I'll be buying both a Sawyer & MSR Guardian. If the Guardian is too cumbersome for canoe tripping it can live in the SUV or basement awaiting the apocalypse which seems to be close. Saw a few more videos on the GRAYL and it appears it takes quite a bit of muscle which may be difficult while in the boat.

I'll be buying both a Sawyer & MSR Guardian.

I'm not sure what versions Sawyer is selling now. The last one I bought, about 10 years ago, was kind of difficult to find as it did not seem to be the most popular one. I specifically got it because it used the same large filter as their gravity filter setup and was easily removed. My initial thought was that I'd use the bottle during the day and remove the filter for gravity filtering in camp. The bottle turned out to be pretty handy so I never bothered swapping back and forth between it and the gravity setup.
