The fall right after the bridge looked pretty nasty.

It wasn’t a falls as such but some fast water running into the ocean off Sulewasi. Kids were playing in it, having a blast. Brown, brown, brown. I was afraid if what poisons might be in the water.

It's shocking to watch, and tempting to criticize. The video is instructional, but I hope if I witness such a thing that my first reaction will not be to record it, but rather to do something helpful.

The notion of the "bystander effect" has been around a long time and suggests that people are less likely to help in groups due to diffusion of responsibility and social influence. Phones, as the devices through which we constantly observe and record our circumstances, seem to exacerbate our detachment.

Sort of makes a paddler want to carry a throw bag of rope with them whenever they're near water, whether they have a boat along or not.
