The power of a flash flood on a placid stream

The fall right after the bridge looked pretty nasty.

It wasn’t a falls as such but some fast water running into the ocean off Sulewasi. Kids were playing in it, having a blast. Brown, brown, brown. I was afraid if what poisons might be in the water.

It's shocking to watch, and tempting to criticize. The video is instructional, but I hope if I witness such a thing that my first reaction will not be to record it, but rather to do something helpful.
Sort of makes a paddler want to carry a throw bag of rope with them whenever they're near water, whether they have a boat along or not.

We actually had a discussion about that among local friends not long ago. Two recent incidents in which individuals were swept down the class 4 stretch of the Upper Payette next to highway 55 brought that to mind. If only one of the people who happened to be there and trying to help had a throw rope with them....
We are driving next to swift rivers so much of the time, we realize now that it's probably a good idea to keep that rescue equipment in our vehicle even if we're not planning to be on the water. You never know....

And whenever you're near water taking said equipment with you every time you step out of the vehicle. When seconds count it doesn't do much good if the rope bag is in the vehicle a quarter mile away. When you get complacent is when things happen.
