Smartphone or tablet as GPS?

In my experience, the inReach (nice malapropism, Rusty) doesn't have to be intrusive. Mine is typically along for the ride and only gets touched if I'm wondering how far (or fast) I've gone or when I send the "all clear" at night. Wife, kids & other vicarious trippers will probably enjoy following along if you enable the mapshare function. They can see where you are in real time & my youngest daughter, in particular, loves it.

Thanks for the input Gamma. Following my progress is one of the main things she's looking forward to. This is a small trip, only 3 days and maybe 20 miles, but it's the first hiking trip since my heart surgery. She normally follows me everywhere I go like this, but my first day on the trail is her last day of teaching before the Thanksgiving break, so she can't go this time. I'm training for it and I'll be ready, but she was just concerned so this will put her mind at ease. I get it, I'd be the same way about her going off alone.
