Show us pictures of your canoe dogs

My canoeing partner, Russet, lives with my daughter in Washington, DC. He's now a four-year Portuguese Water Dog. We usually get together twice a year for a trip. Last year we went to Massawepie and Taylor Pond in the Adirondacks. Our trips for this year are scheduled for next month; the destinations are not finalized yet, but they'll be in the Adirondacks. I couldn't ask for a better partner - he's enthusiastic, fun and sticks with me the entire time. He picked up the process of sitting or lying in front of me quickly. We practiced in the yard (with a loaded canoe) before the trip, getting in/out three times. He's been flawless with it ever since.

Great looking Dog TrailBlaser. Love the pics, look forward to seeing more on a trip report next month 😉.

She loves the water and hates being left behind but I no longer bring her because she barks the whole time. It's very out of character for her to bark - she'll happily watch delivery people walk up the drive and onto the porch without a peep. But for some reason if I put her in a canoe or bicycle trailer she barks the entire time. She'll stop for a few minutes when I give the "quiet" command but then restarts. I don't know if it's excitement or anxiety. It's a shame because I love having her along.

This is our girl Arwen. She does great in the canoe and loves swimming and running the portage trails. She had her first multi-day trip this past summer and will be joining me on many more.

I am quite allergic to dogs, but always wanted a golden retriever. She definitely takes after the retriever more than the poodle and she has no effect on my allergies. Best dog I’ve ever had.

Retrievers make great boat dogs, but so do all of the cow dog breeds. I have paddled with Dachshunds, Welsh Corgis, Blue Healers, Border Collies, Labs, and Chichis. My latest Border Collie went on a week long river trip at the age of 6 months. They just want to go.

Anybody else have a pup who doesn't use the pad you provide for them?!

Nope, that's a new one on me. Has it ever slipped under them while they were jumping into the boat? If so perhaps that made them distrustful.

I enjoyed going through this thread, though it’s a couple years old, and thought I’d post a photo of my Loba in my 1910 Kennebec…We’re not sure of her age, but she’s been living with us for about six years, has a lot of shepherd in her blood, and absolutely loves canoes…she’s very well behaved, and often sleeps while I’m paddling…

It’d be great to see some more canoe dogs out there…
