I know this is sad news for those that are fond of the Boy Scouts, but given the range of possible buyers, OSI and a transfer to the state is the best possible outcome.
I would imagine that once the transfer to NYS is completed, DEC will remove the structures, likely to be determined non-conforming with the unit management plan...assuming that there IS a unit management plan!
I remember a time when public access was nearly impossible, then when the public could access the "wilderness", so could the float planes. Eventually the planes were no longer allowed, and now (or soonly) all of Lows will be accessible by everyone. I've seen comments that recommend the area become another DEC operated public campground, but I would much prefer it to become a paddle only destination.
In a few more years, a nearby private lease holding expires (Partlow Lake) and may be added to the ADK holdings as well.
Now NYS just needs to acquire Little Forked Lake and the balance of the former Whitney estate, and we'll truly have a paddlers paradise!!
