Just had lunch with a good friend from Fairbanks. He is showing a slide show of his ascent of Denali in 1970.

Hi Al,
I paddled the same canoe for around 30 years. Mine was white and from 1951. I repaired a thwart and the inner gunwale and just paddled it. Finally the canvas rotted off. I started to repair it and planned to replace 12 ribs and the gunwales. The old brittle wood was very tedious to work on. I finally gave up and gave it to a Native friend of mine. All of my canoes are sold and I no longer paddle but I sure miss the OT Guide 18.

It sure is a fun canoe to paddle. It will be the hardest of my w/c boats to give up.
It sounds like you got a lot of use out of yours.

Dam beavers...



They've been busy, blocking this tunnel between the first or upstream lake where our cabin is and the lower lakes of the chain. Took about a half hour to move enough sticks and mud to scrape through. The above pic is looking back on the return trip. Of course the next bridge to the third lake was also blocked, and I didn't have the energy to clear that one too. No doubt the beavers will have it repaired tonight.

This is heading back towards the bridge on the return trip. Lotsa lily pads to push through because nobody's been paddling there recently.

I had to invent a new paddle stroke, the "overhead culvert pole/pry", pushing against the ribs of the corrugated steel tunnel roof, which sadly replaced the original 1930s CCC-built stone bridge a few years ago
