I found out why canoeing and other activities on the Sorgue River are not allowed during this time. This is a fish preserve and apparently extremely popular with fly fishermen fishing for trout and grayling. So the river is closed during this period, maybe for spawning, to protect the fish. Also it is a no kill river. The water is so clear, you find your fish and then cast your nymph to the fish. Apparently the fish are extremely difficult to catch. Also this is a karst narrow valley with other natural interest and they are trying to preserve it. I certainly support that.

I used a paddle to lift this rat snake. It grabbed onto the t-grip and wouldn't let go.

I think it worked itself into a groundline hitch.

Have we had in this Goliath thread the inside of a composite canoe making shop?

This is the Savage River Canoe facility in Oakland, Maryland, this morning cutting the bottoms off my Illusion's seat bolts. A canoe mold is in the foreground and a racing canoe in the background. Rolls of foam are on the top shelf and yellow foam gunwales are on the shelves on the far left.

Wood, plastic, metal . . . what are those materials?

I'm just back from a week in France. First stop was the River Drome for the French Canoe festival which is the biggest in Europe. The river is always an amazing colour and full of rapids drops and amazing scenery.



Then we headed for the River Allier.
In France, on regularly paddled rivers, canoe passes have been fitted on many of the wiers previously used as power for water mills. This one had a three foot drop at the end which surprised me, however a good strong brace kept me in the boat and allowed me to get the eddy to empty the canoe.

Wenonah Aurora. Not the best for moving water, but the only plastic boat I have. I bought it 16 years ago ex outdoor centre. It has the floppiest bottom I have ever seen on a canoe and now has two wooden ribs in to stiffen it. With the demise of royalex I reckon I could still get 75% of what I paid for it.

15 solo open canoes today on the Batsto River in the NJ Pine Barrens. 4 Savage Rivers (Ornstein designs), 4 Swifts, 3 Northstars, 2 Bells, and 2 Curtis's.

First paddle of the year today. Still more ice than open water. That mountain in the back is the new open pit mine in G-Town. The perspective is off, it's a massive hill of arsenic filled dirt, at least 200 feet tall already. Some people see money, some people see an ugly hill, I'm of the latter conviction.
