I finished the book, Canoe Trip. He talks about wearing a belt for keeping survival gear on/in. Perhaps this idea came prior to fishing/rescue PFDs, but I like the idea. Does anyone still do this or just jam everything into their pockets and PFD? I don't work for Kifaru, but I do have a 'bit' of their gear. It is top shelf.

Here are a few different belts. They might not be great for sitting except for the thin one though.

Nice. I see these guys on videos portaging with barrel harness and drypacks with 'stuff' dangling in every location and direction. I haven't done any extensive trips, but it seems like a sure way to lose essential gear and annoy the hell out of you. I was trained to have everything silent for patrolling and raiding, and I realize that portaging isn't an attack on the enemy, but I teach my kids to be quiet in the woods so that we can spot wildlife. That is probably welcomed in bear country by noisy river sections though.

pblanc, what do you attach other than a rope? Or don't you keep a rope in there?

I have my waist throw bag attached with 2 aluminum carabiners on each side of the belt. If you really wanted to carry some type of pack on the back of the belt, instead of the throw bag, you could probably do so if the pack had molle attachment points.
