For folks in the area who might be interested, there is a new birchbark canoe exhibit at the Peabody Museum which features some Penobscot canoe heritage and traditional gear.

Their full sized canoe looks to be in great shape considering it dates to 1904. Also very unique is that this bark canoe has guide seat woven with split rush. Seats in bark canoes are rare so this canoe is a sort of transitional boat between the birchbark era and canvas canoes. Thought it might serve as a neat idea for anyone wanted to make a seat out of more natural materials...

They also have a pretty unique paddle on display (documented to 1849) with some traditional painted scroll decorations and very distinct, concave grip design.
