It does the same thing that the keel or centerboard on a conventional sailboat does, keep the boat from sliding sideways when the wind is from the side.

In the '70s, I chose "sailing" as one of the required Phys Ed classes at a massive midwestern university. We sailed Grumman aluminum canoes on the river that passed through campus.

I was never in the water. My memory is imperfect over 50 years later but I don't recall that capsizes were a problem. Even in the days before the world turned averse to any hint of liability, the canoes had to be reasonably stable to turn loose so many novices. There was a low-head dam near the downstream edge of campus.

This may work better with a Grumman than a freestyle canoe.

So for Phys Ed, I sat in a boat. Didn't even paddle.

Tell us about the sail . How big? Did you make it?

There's nothing special to say about it...
It's originally a sail made by the german company “Klepper,” and it was originally intended for a folding boat.
I was able to buy the sail very cheaply on eBay—and I think it'll be more than enough for my boat.

Do you have experience sailing?
Much like skiing, it takes about 15 minutes to learn and a lifetime to get really good. You need to work with an unseen, but certainly felt, force of nature. Based on your experience and equipment, you can enjoy an ever widening range of conditions, but it’s always fun at any level of experience and externals.
Most folks that have never sailed are quite surprised by just how dynamic the experience can be.
Betcha can’t wait to test it out!!
