I recently found this site after rediscovering the joys of canoeing. I’ve been spending a lot of time reading this forum so I figured I should join and introduce myself.

I spent much of my youth canoeing rivers and lakes in Iowa and the Midwest. For the last couple decades, I’ve been using a kayak for my river and camping adventures. My family and I moved to central Vermont a year ago and we been enjoying exploring rivers and lakes here in our old Grumman canoes. (17’ standard and 20’ Guide) We’ve been enjoying it so much that we’ll likely add to the fleet since there are so many great canoe options available around here. If there are any paddlers in the area with river trip or lake suggestions, I’m always looking for new places to paddle.

Lots of beauty here.

Welcome! Where did you live and paddle in Iowa? There are a few of us from the state here on the forum. I'm in Estherville (near Spirit Lake/Okoboji).

Nice,I know the Estherville area quite well and went through there often on our trips to the Iowa Great Lakes . I lived in Central Iowa, Ames area, for most of my life. I spent a lot of time on various rivers around there. Skunk, Boone, Des Moines, Raccoon, Iowa etc… Spent many nights on sandbars and had some of the best times of my life with friends there.

Welcome 802. I believe that’s Mt. Carmel in the distance seen from Chittenden Reservoir. I’ve spent many pleasant hours there on the reservoir, often “dinner cruises” where we paddle out to a likely shoreline, swim and enjoy the lake, cook dinner over a fire, then paddle home at sunset.

Although there are plenty of lakes to paddle in Vermont, I prefer the Adirondacks for canoe camping, or, ‘tripping’. Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area in Addison, VT might be an interesting spot to paddle.

That’s a similar way that we enjoy Chittenden, lots of swimming, picnics and relaxing.

The Adirondacks are definitely on our radar for tripping and I’m also trying to figure out what rivers around here are suitable for longer runs. It’s somewhat of a challenge with all of the waterfalls and dams, something I’m not as used to coming from the Midwest, but it’s been fun doing smaller sections and scouting out possibilities for multiple overnights.

I’ve been to Dead Creek a couple times with a kayak and canoe since it’s fairly close. When I was there in early June, the Carp were very active with mating season and I must have seen hundreds as I paddled along. Nice place to get away since there's rarely anyone else there.

Welcome. I really like vt and spend a lot of time up in the jefferson aera. Plenty of canoeing up there. Some lakes are Willoughby, Maidstone, island pond. Also the north forest canoe trail runs from lake champlain to the connecut River. You can break sections out of that. maps are available on web, nfct web site has got a good interactive map. And then there are great rivers that offer just about any thing from raging white water to barley drifting. Vt has just about every thing out doors people like. But for better canoetripping go to the adarondacks 2-3hrs. Hope to see you out there

Thanks for the welcome and suggestions. That’s a nice part of the state. I’ve looked into the North Forest canoe trail a little. It looks like there are some nice sections. The Missisquoi river going into Lake Champlain intrigues me and may be the first section I try. I hope to do an Adirondack trip next summer.
