Photo of the day

Just curious, Steve, how high a tide was that and have you tried both rudders?
We have small tides here on Nantucket. I launched a little after the low-high-water (the lesser of the two high tides each day), which was about 3' on this particular day. When this photo was taken, the tide was going out and might have dropped to about 2.5'. By comparison, the high-high-water that day would have only been about 3.5'. This particular creek is navigable down to about 1', but I try and avoid dead lows, especially in a long boat like this because you end up paddling in muck and its no fun. Open water is where this boat shines but the drone operator bailed before I made it that far. I hope to send a photo surfing a ferry wake later this season! To date, I've only used the weed-rudder, not the larger surf rudder.

My dogs and I have a short trip planned for mid August. Jake is a veteran of many trips deep in the bush. This will be my pup Max ( 10 months ) first experience. Here we are exploring and practicing on the Trempealeau river, very twisty and lots of current. Max is settling in the canoe better and seems to really enjoy exploring by canoe. Thanks for your reply, Mason. In 1998, we did a lot of bottom of canoe scrapping in those wide swerving gravel bends lower down the river as water got thinner and siltier. Trip report? Video?
G.
Thinner and siltier is right! It's amazing that such a prominent river can be so shallow. No report or vid, just some memories and a few pix. Here's a pic of some of the canyon rapids: 1755093278740.png

Today was hot and humid … good day to practice the patience of my pup. This is the last practice day before our short trip to the Turtle Flambeau Flowage in Wisconsin … it will be Max’s first trip. We paddled about an hour with a tripping load of gear. Max did settle and responded well to commands. He, like my older dog Jake, lives to experience the outdoors.

I am excited to see how he does .

I miss paddling with my dog.
My German Shorthair was basically another Canoe Sport employee back in the good old days and would love to ride along or swim as I paddled. He had some skill at getting in and out of a floating canoe.

Photo from Keewaydin Temagami Endseason last weekend. The campers have tumped up the boats as part of a skills competition. The boats are waiting their turn for a camper to flip them up, load them on the water with duffels and loaded wannigan and then paddle them through a course tandem and solo. It goes on for much of the day in front of a silent group of fellow trippers and families. It’s an amazing display of complex skills by teenagers who’ve just returned from six weeks out on trip. When these boats get flipped down to the ground from overhead it’s with the care of someone placing a baby bird back into a nest…

After the Gunn Trophy.

After the Gunn Trophy.

I always envied the kids lucky enough to attend one of those canoe camps.

There is a good article on field repair of canvas canoes in there. It was very informative. You can use a piece of your blue jeans to repair canvas, but don't use your underwear. To repair a puncture in your planking use the top of a tin can to cover it, among other things.

Eight years ago on a Kopka Rv trip we encountered a Keewaydin group doing our route in reverse going upstream from Nipigon to Allenwater Bridge. The leaders told us the kid’s (12 -16 years old) families paid something like $4000.00 each for this 28 day trip. I would have loved to do a trip like that when I was a kid but all my family could afford was the church/scout camps I attended from the late 1950’s to the early 1960’s for about $15-20.00 per week.

I wonder how it compares to sending a kid to sleep away camp for a month.

A long time ago I ran the canoeing program for a few years at camp Timanous in Maine and the page at the link below indicates that they charge $12,900 for the full season and $8,500 for a half session (which is about a month). My understanding is that some other camps in the region charge more.
