Knife build / canoetripping.net fund raiser thread.

Ah, okay Rippy. Butts, bolsters, finger guards...I'm still just a 58 yr old newbie. Thanks for being patient with me.
It's looking good this early on in the project. You're a metal magician.

Serious tooling !

Jim
For me I like to envision, design, then produce what I envisioned. I was a machinist for many years so I look to those type tools to produce things efficiently. A knife could be completely built using hand tools if one so desired. Just like you could whittle the bead and cove on your cedar strips if it gave you enough pleasure. I could drill the finger guard with a hand drill and file the slot with a needle file and get the same results in time but I'm not into that.

No problem Brad, I'm glad you are interested in this project.

I appreciate Quality workmanship ! I have no doubt ! I knew you were a machinist.
I'm loving this journey !

Here's a few more progress pictures. In this pic I'm drilling a pinning hole. During final assembly the finger guard will be pinned in place with a brass pin.

After sliding all the handle pieces on the tang they are clamped up against the finger guard using my gluing clamp. I am drilling a hole for a brass tube that will anchor the handle to the knife tang.

There, the handle pieces are trial mounted to the knife tang. Cross holes are drilled for the finger guard and the wood. Spacers are in place. Time to set parts and pieces aside and go back to working on the blade. Dave

Ho yes... Mem, you better print a picture cause that knife ain't going on your belt!!!

Mem, you deserve a special custom knife. I am thinking the bolsters would be polished aluminum made from melted down cans of Bud Light.

I've never been particularly lucky when it comes to draws and stuff, that's why I usually resort to cheating, so don't get to confident Rougey!

Pretty amazing stuff, forget the name of the knife, having a knife with Possehl stamped into it is a true sign of craftsmanship.

That was funny Canotrouge, it's like the only way Toronto will get to the Stanley Cup finals is if they buy tickets.

I bought a second place prize...a Leatherman from the dollar store, with a patent leather sheath, that might look great on Memaquays hip next Outers trip.

Hahahahahahahahaha.... I'm usually make my luck to Mem... But again, I'm at the other end of the world, would be really hard to cheat.... And I already told Rippy that it wasn't my style of knife shape wise so even if I win he might just put my name out and write Memaquay....

pile on memequay day

When it comes time to putting a keen edge on it Rippy, it needn't be too keen if it's heading up north to Memequay country. It only needs to be sharp enough to cut Klick.
I showed my wife photos of the knife that'll be hanging from my belt next summer, and she said "Oooh, I like the satin. Shiny is too, too, too ostentatious." I had to look that up.

Look under the header picture above. Sorry it needs to be presented better. Back to the drawing board.

Hey memaquay, put some under my name would you, that way you are sure that knife will at least end up in the great north!!
