Sadie's Bloodvein Trip Report

Thanks for bringing this back up. I haven't read it in a long time and got a kick out of reliving it again.

That was fun to read again.

A friend’s dog had an account on a paddling message board; Bob (the dog), posting as Dr. Bob. Dr Bob was quite cutting about his idiot human companion and there was a several year game trying to guess the actual identity of who was posting as Dr. Bob.

It wasn’t me, but I wish I had thought of it first.

Thanks for the expertly written TR, Sadie. And, those photos... such a cutie ! (Just a little late, I know) Just one question for Alan: what is required by Canadian customs when crossing the border with a dog?

You're supposed to have all vaccination certificates and, if I remember right (and I might not) the dog is supposed to have had a recent vet checkup with a note of well being from your vet. I carried all these things the few times we crossed the border but was never asked for them.

The official rules/requirements are found on this page:

You might also want to check with the requirements when returning to the US:

I believe there is a hilarious scene in a book by Steinbeck in which he leaves the US with his dog. The Canadians won’t let him in because he doesn’t have the required papers for the dog. He turns around, goes back to the US and they won’t let the dog in because he doesn’t have the required papers.

Alan, thanks for your reply. BTW, how is Sadie doing these days? She sure had the trip of a lifetime on the Bloodvein!

BTW, just a couple of questions that Sadie didnt address: how many days was your Bloodvein trip? I just read that you built your own canoe... awesome! Then you sold this canoe? ...have you built/bought a replacement?

Yes, I built (and later sold) the canoe that did this trip. But that's because I made some slight modifications to the plans and then built a composite version.

It was certainly the high point of her tripping career. The trip took us 30 days. We did an even more epic trip the following year but there were less portages and no frogs so she was a bit let down. That trip, as I remember, was 43 days. You can read my trip report here. Sadie didn't write one that year.

That trip was Sadie's last and while she continued to be active and healthy for many more years she started to lose her hearing and I began to lose by drive for canoe tripping so we kept our adventures local. Earlier this last summer he heart began failing and I had to put her down at 16 years old. She had a great life and I had a great time living it with her.

Thanks for your reply ... I'm so sorry to hear about Sadie. Sending out thoughts and prayers to you and your family...

Any plans for future solo wilderness trips? My nature excursions will be spent hiking at Indiana SPs.

I'm really not sure. Now that Sadie is gone I feel like doing some traveling again. I'm taking off for 2 weeks of hiking and biking in SE Arizona over Christmas and would like to get away for a month or more for a long trip next summer. But I don't know if it will be a road trip, a canoe trip, or if it will even happen at all.

Life is pretty good around here so while there is some desire to travel I also feel pretty content just being where I am, which I couldn't always say.
