Users may have noticed that I have marked several threads as "sticky." For example, the Nokomis Build thread, in the Paddlecraft Construction subforum, is marked "sticky". Marking a thread "sticky" means that the thread stays at the top of the subforum, regardless of other threads in that subforum that may appear afterwards. Sticky threads have a yellowish color.

I am looking for threads with large views and responses that are worthy of highlighting.

This is first and foremost a community website and, as always, your thoughts on how it can be improved are valued. Dave

There should be NO sticky topics.

The most currently popular topics should always rise to the top. Otherwise, by inexorable temporal extrapolation, a future time will come when the first page of forums will all be sticky topics. And, for example, I don't think most new or future readers of the forum now care more about Nokomis Build than about scores of other topics. (I don't even know what Nokomis Build means, so I guess I never read the thread.)

The best way to allow people to find popular topics is to enable sorting in each forum, and over the entire site, on number of responses and number of views (if we can't already do that -- I'm not sure). That is, a user simply clicks on "responses" or "views" and the threads should sort in ascending or descending order of popularity. Simple.

I'm with Glenn, Stickies need to be only posts that are critical for users to see, popularity doesn't generally equate to that. I'm on quite a few boards, some use temporary stickies because if they don't it doesn't take long for the entire first page to be made of stickies that most viewers have no interest in reading.

One of those boards recently had 20 stickies on the first page of 25 threads, I guess people complained because a couple of days later they were all gone.

I agree with the above posts, not a fan of stickies. No need for that, there's tons of info on how to build a fiberglass canoe out there, and lots of other information on every other subject on these forums.
We have some great trip reports but no need for stickies.
And while I'm on the soap box, a couple of guys get in a hissy fit when called out about posting a kayak build and now we have a rules sticky.
It's a canoe site....

Glenn for your information. DaveO offered to place my Nokomis Thread, in Sticky.

I get a lot of requests from Builders on other sites, mostly(Cedar Strip Canoe and Kayak Building). on Facebook. It helps me share the build thread with others that build, or like to learn.

I'm sure others have joined this site because I suggest it to them.

I would be totally happy to access it another way, easier than scrolling through page after page to find and share it.

I rarely view Stickies myself. I do appreciate the ease of accessing to share.

Thanks DaveO !

Scrolling past a sticky is no problem for me ! Certainly nothing to whine about.

I see their benefit !

I’m with Glenn, Recped, Waterspyder, Robin and Boreal Birch, for all of the reasons mentioned.

The “Photo of the day thread”, running since October of 2013, and the “What are you reading” thread, started on December of 2011 don’t seem to need stickies, they continue to rise to the top all on their own.

Some admin/board use threads, “Terms and Conditions” and “Thoughts for a safe transaction” do merit a stickie. And of course anything I post ;-)

Just make a new Topic called Stickies, then whomever wants them can go peruse there and the others don't need to see them.

If there are to be stickies that seems a sensible solution, provided heavily posted threads, like Photo of the Day and What are You Reading, also remain in their sub-fora, where newer members might think to look first for book recommendations or photography.

It is Dave’s board, and I trust his judgment. But, were I admin (gawd forbid), I would not want the additional responsibility of choosing amongst nominations, selecting which member’s threads merit stickie-dom, or deciding what is helpful information sharing and what is self-promotion.

Thank to all for the feedback.

"I trust his judgment" I will work hard to earn everyone's trust in my judgment. I am the person that has to make the necessary calls on this board, but I will always carefully consider the users' opinions.

Most of the users, that care enough to post about it, are leaning against sticky threads. So, I am not planning to make any more sticky threads on canoe tripping topics. I plan to leave as sticky the Nokomis thread, Photo of the day thread, and What are you reading thread, but not make any other more such threads sticky. Purely administrative threads that are important will remain sticky.

Dave, I noticed that the “RIP Photos and Memorial” thread is also a stickie. I (sadly) appreciate that.

My backpacking, canoeing and cross country travel companion Brian passed away suddenly two days ago. He took the dog for a walk in the woods near his house; the dog came home, Brian didn’t.

A number of folks here on Canoe Tripping had the pleasure of paddling or camping with Brian, and I will scan in some photos of him as a memorial album. Maybe a lot of photos, Brian was a photogenic guy, and I had been on adventures with him starting in the 10[SUP]th[/SUP] grade.

CT’er Chip Walsh, who paddled and camped Brian a time or three, said something old-friends-wise struck me as so true that I printed it out for my quote wall:

“I don’t know many people with who I have been friends for 50 years
You can’t make another friend like that”

Unless I make it to 115, probably not.

I'm staying out of the Sticky conversation but just wanted to address an easier way to find your old posts. It's easy to Google them, which is how I find all my old posts rather than trying to scroll through the paged archives. For instance, on your Nokomis build just type jim dodd nokomis site:canoetripping.net into the Google search box.

This is what you'll get: https://www.google.com/search?sourc...hUKEwjKm_i22pnuAhXLhK0KHdzeA8kQ4dUDCAg&uact=5

When you add the site:canoetripping.net it only shows search results from this website rather than the whole internet.

I find Google much more accurate than this website's search engine (which goes for pretty much all discussion forums).

Alan

Thanks Alan !

That will work just Fine !

I appreciate the Help !

Okay I guess I "care enough to post about it", but the point seemed moot from the get go.
Sticky use isn't really necessary. If someone can navigate the internet to get here they can surely explore all there is to find here in this rich treasure trove of threads.
A sticky might be used for admin purposes but even that can easily be solved. That is what category headings are for are they not?
Otherwise stickies quickly become editorial vanity projects.
But I will go with the flow and like most who post or lurk here I will just choose my own way just fine. But a sincere thanks for the offer of help.
Take care Dave, and all of you trippers be well.

I would find it almost impossible if I were king to decide which threads deserve the honor of being sticky-worthy, other than administrative announcements.

However, an attribute that would be absolutely necessary would be a topic that current and future posters are highly likely to continue to post in. The only thread that I think meets that criterion is Photo of the Day -- but, as has been said, even that floats to the top all on its own. I don't think any boat build or outfitting thread would meet this criterion once the project is finished and shown off a few times.

Although What Are You Reading may be of continuing future interest, it's not sticky-worthy, in my opinion, because it's not limited to canoeing books and is hence borderline off-topic. This is a canoeing site, not a general book of the month club. To give further examples of potentially ongoing interest threads that are, however, mostly off-topic would be:

What Music Do You Listen to on the Way to the Put-in
What Tires Do You Use on Your Canoe Vehicle
What Are Your Favorite Movies to Stream on Your Smart Phone While Sitting in Your Tent
What is Your Favorite Restaurant on the Way Home from the Take-out

In my opinion, none of these kinds threads is even on topic, much less sticky-worthy, although we've had a few like them and I've never complained.

Doesn't everyone just go to "today's posts" or "new topics" anyway?

I agree that too many stickies on one forum can be a very bad thing. However, we have 34 forums here and there's certainly room for one or two stickies in some forums. I would limit the most active forums like DIY and General Discussion to 1 or 0 stickies unless another topic ever reaches the amount of responses or views that 'what are you reading' and 'photo of the day' in which case it should be stickied (stuck?) regardless of which forum it is in. Then in a forum like Recipes, Robin's 'Cowboy Coffee Thoughts' has nearly triple the responses and double the views of the next most popular topic in the Recipes forum. The Recipes forum has 0 stickies so far, and only 3 pages of topics dating back to 2013. It would not bother me if a post like that was stuck. Same with Glenn's 'show me your tents' in Tents, Tarps and Hammocks, but I think a post like coldfeet's "Mad River Monarch" in Solo shouldn't get stuck because while it has the most views and responses in it's forum, it is not that relevant to a forum named Solo.

Now let's hear from all the tea drinkers and Monarch fans...

Assume I don't like stickies, and I'm NOT interested in Paddle Craft Construction ? Why would a sticky in that sub forum bother me ?

Thanks to Alan's great advise, I was able to share the link he provided, on Facebooks, Cedar Strip Canoe and Kayak Building page.

My purpose for Sharing my methods of building canoes, has nothing to do with Vanity ! It's about passing on knowledge, as others shared with me when I first started building. I appreciated it !

Thanks Dave for helping ! Who Knows ? Maybe Some day Glenn might want to build a Cedar strip canoe ? He might even look at the Nokomis build sticky ! Even if he doesn't, Maybe someone else will ?

Again Thanks Dave and Alan !
