doesn't look like anybody's selling 'woods' brand packs at the moment -- the quality has increased since the 80's which seems to be an all-time low -- but frankly, they have nothing on duluth as far as construction. i have two late 80's woods packs, a #1 special and a #200 that has been my main tripping pack in the years since then. the fit and finish was, lets say, functional -- the buckles were flat stamped and some of the leather straps were less than centre-punched. That being said, they're both over 25 years old now, i recently replaced the all the leather on the #200 and the two tie down straps on the #1 -- should be good for another 25 years...I have a duluth northwoods, same style, by duluth, i also have what looks like a made-in-india copy of a #200 that i picked up new for $75cdn at the spring sportsmans show five or six years ago -- it's actually better made than my vintage woods stuff...tho the rivets needed a little extra peening... the duluth is a much 'better' pack -- heavier canvas, heavier leather, much sturdier anchor points...so no comparison really to the woods, but keep in mind, until 'woods' went specialty over the past decade or so, these packs listed for between $99 and $130 canadian...they were rugged slog-around the bush working packs that got used, repaired and eventually replaced by camps, outfitters, fire-crews and so on..i'm not sure that there is really merit to the extra rugged features of the american packs, given the price...but hey -- they're very nice packs...loading up my #4 duluth now for the weekend...
grab a canvas army duffel-bag, and strap a tump on it -- a very inexpensive, very versatile, very authentic throwback outfit...
