Having a cable and cadaver parts in my shoulder, I’m a little worried about a fall in the backcountry. My surgeon said, “Don’t fall, and if you do, don’t extend your arm to catch yourself.” It is an involuntary reaction to extend your hand to catch yourself, so that’s just minutiae. My camp shoes are the worrisome part of my gear. Anyone have some shoe suggestions that resist wet or mossy rocks? Please don’t say Crocs.

NRS and Astral have some highly regarded offerings. Fly fishing shoes will perform well. Most people will tell you to not get the felt soles, which are VERY non-slip, because of invasive spread.

You might want to look into the footwear worn by many river guides. Don't know if you're willing to check out sandals but there are many choices in that category. Over the years I've worn Tevas, Alps and now Chacos. There is a new company called Bedrock that is getting good reviews so there are many to look at. And, if you're not into sandals, Bedrock also sells clogs with heel straps so that's another option.

Hope that helps. Take care and until next time....be well.

As others have suggested wading shoes (fly fishermen) and climbing approach shoes often tout sticky bottoms. Vibram makes a lot of different sole materials and many shoe manufacturers specify which ones are on which shoes. You might look for something with the Vibram Megagrip sole.

I wear Astral “Brewers” or “Rasslers”. Soles are siped and a very good compound for wet rocks. I also sometimes wear my chacos and they have a new model out called the “rapid pro” designed for wet slippery rocks.

I’m a notorious cheapskate so it’s unlikely I’ll ever buy these, but the exchangeable sole concept seems interesting. Maybe there’s a shoe and sole combination you might like.
