Not much sun on my week long trip to Disappointment Lake. It was only one longvportage in, and the traffic was non-stop. On the third day, I’m reading a book to my dog when a float plane makes multiple passes around the lake, then buzzes my campsite twice. Then, he lands and taxis up to my camp, opens the window and asks my name. I was very fearful that someone was hurt at home. Seems another solo paddler was overdue. Don’t know how it turned out.

Caught one nice pike and watched a couple catch a really big one in front of my camp.

I really gotta replace my camp shoes. They have no grip on wet rocks whatsoever.

I didn’t want to go home, and Im still considering a return trip after 10/1 when permits aren’t necessary and MAYBE crowds will thin out. I can’t go very far into the interior to escape constant traffic, so maybe October will improve the sense of solitude.

New boat did fine, although I was a little stern heavy without enough gear to easily trim it out with my dog. Double portaging worked out well enough, although my grafted shoulder was sore afterward.

I read last night that a camper in the BWCA needed medical evacuation because his leg got in the way of his axe. It was reported out of Ely but I currently have no other information. Thought at first that might have been the reason for the plane but in retrospect probably not.

That was some fish they caught.

Huh, there was a thread on BWCA.com about that plane and how it circled the lake for a while and then landed. The poster said the pilot then went up to a campsite where a solo paddler was camping, but left without him. Guess that was you. 😄

Small world.

It’s been a very long time since I paddled in the BWCA and haven’t itched to go back because of the reported crowds/reservations, etc.

But maybe a fall trip, after Oct 1. I would take that under consideration.

Sorry that you didn't get much solitude but I'm glad that it (seems to have) went well. Late Fall or Ice-out seem to be the ticket in the BWCA if you can't do one or two brutal portages and get away from the crowds.

Thanks for taking the time to post.

PS: The pic of you & the pup on the rock... Time delay on the camera or did you lift an image from a GoPro?

I have been there several times in October (and sometimes late October) and it surprised me how many people show up, especially on the weekends. I value solitude so I don’t go to the BW much anymore. My last trip was in October 2018.

I have a few spots in northern Wisconsin and the UP that I like in the early Spring and late Fall. They may not be particularly scenic but they are isolated and nice places hang out in the woods. The older I get the more I find myself to be a woods bum rather a wilderness traveler.

Im considering that very thing if I can clean up other stuff and the weather forecast is good.
