Three. A solo for me, a tandem for my wife and I, and a kayak for the unenlightened.

This thread is invaluable conformation in defending that the proper number of canoes to own is “Just one more”.

At the end of polling the results need to be illustrated with a bar graph. Preferably something easily printable for future use as Exhibit A evidence.

The perps with 15 or more need to be ID'ed for the status of "idol"

Well, that sounds better than “obsessive collector” or “idolatry worshiper”.

The family fleet at its most extreme numbered 26 and I am still in the process of winnowing down the boats we rarely use. Our last two SOTS were one sold and the other given away, the folder sold, the beastly I’m-never-picking-it-up-again 20 footer found a freebie home as a motor canoe and the heavy poly boats all passed on to younger friends with stronger backs.

The ancient and unkillable Hydra Horizon kayak will go to some inlaw this fall, and one of the two remaining tandems will likewise go to some friend or relative. That will bring us to 15, and I’ll no longer be a perp in the idolatrous category.

At least until I find the next fixer upper. I’ll have empty rack space again.

I expect that one is a rare bird. Carbon Fiber Prospector with a seemingly unique backstory. IIRC the construction of that canoe was started by Stowe, who offered it only for the year they folded, and the hull was then picked up and finished by another canoe manufacturer.

What was the company that completed the canoe?

I can only assume it was finished off by Adirondack Co but when I tried to contact them they stated they had never seen that hull before. I've yet to see another like it.

I included my aquacycle in the count hoping that it is not considered sacrilegious. It has been christened "Butter Churn". (Sorry picture upload doesn't work.)

The thing that gets me is the non padling public who can't understand why you would need more than one. I don't feel guilty at all about the amount of boats I have. They still cost less than if I were to get a nice motorcycle or motorboat and it was spread out over 25 years.

OT Pack, a Nova Craft 16 Tripper RX, OT Penobscot 16 RX, Bell Northwind RX, OT Loon 138 (it was the first paddle craft I ever purchased myself, can't bear to get rid of it) and I built an Osprey 12' kayak from a Pygmy Boats kit for my daughter as she was too small to paddle anything else at the time. (She is now 16 and paddling the penobscot with her friend this year) Which my second daughter , age 7, is paddling this year.

Anyone wish to purchase a Nova Craft? The wife says one must go, I guess that's a different thread tho

Why does a golfer need all those expensive clubs, or a chef need all those knives? And, of course, for an avid fan of the sport, that is a costly progression of “nice motorcycles” and “nice motorboats”. $$$$

Spread over 40 years of canoe ownership I doubt I have $100 a year in boats and gear. And even that calculation is skewed; I have given away more fixer-uppers than I currently own.

For an active and evolving participant I’d bet the annual cost for a paddlesorts aficionado is less than many other outdoor recreationists.

I’d wager it is less annually over the decades than golf, and in the water sports arena less than motor boating, sailing or scuba. Or even the frozen water sports, probably less than snow mobileing or skiing over the last 40 years.

No one is still seriously golfing with hickory shaft clubs (think wood & canvas canoes), or doing cross-country with surplus Norwegian Army skies (think, tripping with a Grumman), or using tortoise shell dive goggles (um, maybe canvas packs).

Yeah, I’m leading with my chin there, but canoeing may be odd it its lasting regard and participation in traditional ways.

Only three in my fleet, all 17-footers. A Grumman LWT, a Mad River Explorer Royalex, and a Novacraft Blue Steel Prospector which Mr. McCrea sold to me rather than pay shipping back to Canada. The Explorer is getting too heavy for my aged body to tote, so I'm probably going to codicil it to my grandkids. As for wives and the "too many" refrain, you should hear mine complain about my guns. I mean, is 34 such a large number?

It really shouldn't be HOW many you have ? It should be if you think you have enough ? And what is the next one going to be ???

(I NEED a small tandem to trip solo in, light weight of course)

Here in ze socialist republik uv Canada ve believe Zat evry comrade-citizen should haf one boat before allowing some comrade-citizens to haf a second boat. And more zan 2 boats is mere kapitalist decadence!

To the 4 of you who selected 15 or more....you may have a problem.

If I could get the wife and sons to stop paddling I could get away with far fewer boats. The “problem” is that we each have our personal favorite for a day paddling canoe, a tripping canoe and a decked & ruddered sailing canoe. 17 divided by 4 = four and a quarter boats apiece.

I got 99 problems, but owning too many boats isn’t one of them.

I've got ; 2 packable folding canoes, 2 OT wood and canvas boats, 3 OT trippers (one 30 years old and deteriorating, two bought brand new last summer from Cabelas for $517.00 each.), 1 cedar strip WW boat, 1 royalex solo boat, 1 royalex WW boat, a royalex Spirit II, and my go to tripping boat when there are portages, a MR Malacite.

There are a couple I don't need or use, but for the most part they all have or had a purpose at one time.
