• Happy National Apple Pie Day! 🍎🥧😋

Photo of the day

Yes, i have a new phone and the voice recognition and keyboard interaction is not as smooth as I'd like.

The new phone has a great camera. That is a night time photo of a backlight cabin. Also has an optical zoom so I can take pictures of wildlife.

I included it because it had canoes and I know many of us paddled at camps while younger.

Ah . . . . so, anyway, you are a chic oiler. (Chick oiling would be off topic.) By the way, do we all know that the original Grey Owl was a phony, a fake Indian, a "pretendian."
And let's avoid the inconvenient facts that this pretendian was filling the cultural and ecological void of conservation with facts. There's that.
And that was the counterpoint of his "fake" indigenous message of conservation to Colonial Victorians.
The source was false. The message was true.

now - I see. (sorry)

No need to be sorry. I was just engaging in some private 8th grade humor. Besides, French words are not the native language of either of us.

Actually, I know almost nothing about Grey Owl's history or messaging other than that he was a nature lover and conservationist. I'll defer to @Odyssey's opinion. And to try to get our most massive thread back on photo track, here's a picture of Grey Owl paddling his Chestnut Bob's Special. I like his solo paddling style.

I'll say that's our illustrious leader on the left and that he just sold his OC1 but, unfortunately, I have no guesses as to the purchaser on the right.

The boat in the background would be Glenn's recent purchase, a Kee 15 if I remember correctly.

It was pointed out to me by DM that I had labeled my photo so as to give away the answer to two of the five quiz questions. So I changed the label. I have no comment on Alan's answers because he is disqualified from the quiz by virtue of his "super" powers.

I will say that the guy with the darker beard is sort of recognizable from his avatar photo. The guy with the gray beard has been in site photos, both bearded and pre-beard, as have both boats.

Extra credit for identifying the two vehicles by brand and model.

That's me! @Pseudonym (Steve). Glenn is the first CT.netter that I've have had the pleasure to meet in real life and I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon with him. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of canoe and paddle makers from the last forty years. A true enthusiast!

Yes @Alan Gage, I'm the new steward of Glenn's Huki V1-B named "Tahoe Batiki." While our afternoon paddle on the Housatonic was curtailed by a nasty squall (dumping a ton of water over twenty minutes until lightning scared me off the water), I can already tell that I'm going to love this boat. It is perfectly suited to my saltwater environs out here in Nantucket.

In trying to "fly the ama" (the smaller hull is called the "ama") and discern the boat's center of mass, I managed to go "huli" twice, which I learned from Glenn is Hawaiian for capsize. 🤣

The boat is a massive 22' long, but very slight and weighs only 30+ lbs., so it's relatively easy to manage. I'm looking forward to fitness paddles in Nantucket harbor, overnights to Muskeget island (off the western end of Nantucket) and eventually perhaps some paddling of modest swells. The boat's two 6" hatches should allow me to carry about 50 lbs. of gear. None of my other canoes are suited to open expanses of salt-water, so this acquisition will be a huge boon to my paddling opportunities.

Here I am, soaked and elated, after my first paddle:

I've always been intrigued by these outrigger canoes. I really enjoyed paddling a surfski for a while but did not like the low kayak seating position which made single sticking a little awkward. These seem like they'd be perfect for rough and windy days when paddling an open canoe is no fun or just getting out to put on the miles when you feel like a good workout.

Enjoy!
