I can't post a picture because I can't find one. Here's what I see:

This fish is up to 15"-18" long. It looks like a trout from above (strongly fishform, but not so much as a carp) and has a wide (up to 1/2"?), dark lateral line from the gills to almost the tail. The lateral line is blotchy or interrupted in some fish, nearly solid in others. The color is lighter below the lateral line, slightly darker above, with no obvious stripes, spots, or other markings other than perhaps a subtle mottling on the top side. I see them in shallow, slow-moving water guarding nest scrapes. This is in Stoughton, Wis. (south of Madison).

I can't find it in any of the fish charts I've seen. Does anyone know what it is?

By the description and activity it sounds like a Largemouth Bass.

Thanks Clem & YC. That's the only one it comes close to. But it seems longer and with less of a "tuck" behind the rear dorsal and anal fins. At this point LMB gets the nod.
