Mysterious hole in an old Sears chopped fiberglass 12 footer

Wondering if anyone knows why there's a hole at the bottom of each end's floatation chamber in this 1970's Sears 12' canoe. They look original....
Confused.

It’s a drain hole. There is probably foam in the chamber for the floatation.

that looks to me like some kind of overpressure opening ... possibly because of the foarm piece on the inside ...
It is also a kind of drainage at the same time.
