Life above the gunwales is way too top heavy. That is why we immediately went to multiple hulls for stability. I have lashed two canoes together as a catamaran. They were stable but tended to plunge through waves. Large aluminum canoes or beamy load carriers like an OT Tripper would be best. They have full ends and tend to go up and over waves. Lots of load carrying ability.
