I have quite a bit of milkweed growing around my place, and I do encourage it. The blossoms are pretty, and edible too with the right timing and preparation. But in fifty years I have yet to see a monarch butterfly or caterpillar anywhere near my location. They were common where I grew up in California, but apparently don't come around here.

A friend of mine who grew up outside of Tupper Lake in the Adirondacks, used to collect milkweed pods for the war effort when he was a kid. He told me his school would let kids out to collect the pods and bring them back to the school. From there they were shipped off somewhere (he didn't know the location) so the military could use them in making PFDs. He said all the kids were proud of what they were doing to help out our country.
