Happens every year

Well, six more weeks of Winter. I wonder what Groundhog tastes like?
Count the calendar weeks until the Vernal Equinox, just a couple days more than 6 weeks to the first day of spring! What a coincidence. Phil is right again, as good as any weather observer. Happens every year.

No lack of woodchucks here in CNY. Every young boy's first .22 target. Farmers are happy to be rid of them. I had a large yelllow lab who would lay on my porch facing an open field about 100 yards away where "Chuck" lived. When ever Chuck's head appeared outside of his hole to snack on fresh grass, the dog would take a flying leap off the porch and run across the field to catch the critter. Of course he coldn't, but he would always pee down th hole before returning home.

As a kid in Maryland, my Dad took us groundhog hunting often. His concept was if you can hit a small target at 250 yards, then big game hunting would be easy. He was right.

I don't think we ever tried eating one. Although we ate lots of other things that came out of the woods. I remember setting a trap line at age 12 and cooking a possum on a spit over a fire and making sandwiches out of it.

My Dad always gave away the groundhogs we shot. There were plenty of poor farmers back in the 1950 and 60s.

I used to shoot groundhog for farmers in SE Ohio. The farmers would keep me supplied in .22-250 ammo and coolers full of ice cold Coke.
