Quebec will have to wait for spring to arrive. The unusually cold weather this winter will continue in the first half of the season and slow the arrival of mild weather, according to The Weather Network’s 2015 Spring Outlook for March, April and May.

"The snow covering the ground and the significant icing of the Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence will keep the warmth away,” said Marie-Josée Grégoire, meteorologist for MetéoMedia, The Weather Network’s French-language service in Quebec.
"Because of the cold, precipitation may fall more as snow than rain early in the season,” she said. “The specter of a March snow storm is real.” "

Thanks Gerald, I'm not sure what my plans are for this spring, LaVerendrye is always an option. Might be worth taking my wall tent and wood stove with that forecast, wouldn't be the first time to see snow in LaVerendrye. Hope the ice is out by mid May

Holy cow, that one made me laugh. It would be more realistic around here if they substituted June for March, as March is often the biggest snow month. Seriously though, if they have received weather at all similar to us, late May will probably be an accurate ice out date.

Ice out, a concept. A work friend went ice fishing last weekend and needed the extension on the auger to get through. Lake Winnipeg has just over 4 feet of ice.

Once it breaks up and the wind starts moving it...

Hey Robin,

The season for La Vérendrye this year is May 15 th to Sept. 13 th. Ice out in LV is usually around the 7th. So this year with the coldest February since 105 years up here it may be dicey to plan for the first weekend.

Here in NYS the ice is thick enough that many people think the opening day of trout season (April 1st) will find the Adirondack fisherman still inside their shanties. Typically I teach an outdoor education class up there that begins the week before Memorial Day and we're all wondering how cold with the water be. Since we spend a lot of time with our students canoeing in this course, I'm hoping that at least the sun will be out by then; although anyone falling in will most likely experience cold water shock regardless what the air temperature is.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.

I think anyone contemplating canoeing a lake in the NE part of N America will have to wait a while for ice out. The ice froze thick and clear before the snows started. So there is three feet of ice with a four foot blanket on top to preserve it well. It will take a while to get rid of some of that blanket to let light in. I am predicting we may have our first canoe trip in Maine at the end of May.

The trout fishermen will be perched on the snow banks dangling lines into the open water we do have ( current at Songo Locks for example). Ought to make for some good pix.. The ice fishermen would love to be out but legally shanties have to be off ice Mar 31.
