Brief History and Overvue of construction of a Birch Bark Canoe (new)

Thanks, that was great. I was told that originally birch bark canoes were made out of one piece of bark off large trees. is that true?

Certainly in northern Canada the birch trees were not large enough that a canoe could be made from one piece of bark.

An interesting video on the Dogrib (Tlicho) birch bark canoe can be found here. Tlicho territory ran from Great Slave Lake north to the Barrens, where large trees of any type are rather scarce.

Robin - Thanks for the video. Not sure if I appreciate the porcupine quill neck knife sheath or the canoe more. Both are beautiful examples of artistic expression in utilitarian form.

That's all for now. Take care and until next time...be well.
