    safety review??

Since its the beginning of a new season, and we're excited to get back on the water, can we share some safety tips? Every year we hear of an accident, maybe we can help by sharing good advice. My tip is; Watch for waves, especially coming from the side. Turn into the wave and use your paddle to...

    Too much wind

Here in southern minnesota, we've had some sunny days, but a lot of wind. Way too much wind for canoeing. AccuWeather predicts 20 MPH winds or more most everyday until mid-June. Seems like each year has been windier than the last. Why so much wind? I bet if I bought a kite and looked forward...

    DNR portages

Our DNR here in minnesota does a great job at keeping the boat landings clean, nice and usable. The canoe portages in the BWCA are usually in excellent shape, so I hear. But some of the portages in central MN are not what I'd call a portage. Today I used 2 portages. Nice big signs to let you...

    Carp 'B' Gone

I used to see hundreds of carp. Splashing against my canoe, stirring up the muddy bottom, knowing there was hundreds of them and only one of me, they knew who was boss on the lake. So I got me a bow for bowfishing carp. Took it out today with the canoe to get me some carp. And of course, I dont...

    Storms

Its no fun being in a canoe when a storm moves in fast. A bit of advice: Its better to plan for a storm and not get one than to figure "Oh, its nice out today."

    Stability notes

havent tried that yet. Been trying different scenarios to find weak situations.

    Stability notes

I solo a Discovery 158 which i installed webbed seats. I experimented to find the most stability. If I sit on the front seat and paddle the canoe backwards (but forward), stability is very bad. If i lean to one side, i will tip over very easy. If i kneel on the floor next to the front seat ( and...

    installed web seats

Seems to work much better to sit on the bottom and lean toward the side, and riding the canoe on its side. But what about hitting medium to large waves? Could it tip over easier? And I sure wouldn't want to hit a rock or log. Flip over for sure i bet.

    installed web seats

I installed webbed seats in my OldTown Discovery (which had plastic seats). Tested it out by sitting on front seat facing backwards. I noticed it makes things much more maneuverable. Gives a lot more control over things. But, it does seem harder to paddle a straight line compared to sitting in...

    Trolling motor and wind

Personally, i like paddles with a canoe and probably would never use a trolling motor with a canoe. But, i was wondering how well does a trolling motor help if its windy? I would think it could be somewhat dangerous if the wind caught the canoe just right.

    River Access?

So if im caneoing on a river where a landowner owns the river bottom, and the fast current forces me and the canoe into a rock, and i become injured, i can sue the landowner?

    River Access?

Never had a problem here in minnesota. I think the state owns the river banks. I have seen cases where a land owner has to pay taxes on a strip of land, but doesnt necessarily have rights to it. I believe farmers have to maintain ditches, but dont own them. If you buy a chunk of land next to a...

Any tips on stahying mud free?

I live near the Minnesota River, which offers very nice canoeing. Problem is, the banks are very muddy. By the time I get my canoe launched, Im full of mud and the canoe is full of mud, inside and out. I wear rubber boots, but they get muddy, and get mud inside the canoe when i hop in. Any tips...

    The longest canoe trip....

They will be coming through my town on the Minnesota River. Looks like they've been averaging 30 miles a day going up stream. I know I cant paddle that fast.

What do paddlers do when the water is frozen?

Ice fishing here. Its kinda weird sittin out on the ice where I've passed by with a canoe. And then, its kinda weird passing by with a canoe where i was ice fishing.

    Old Town discontinues models

I see on Old Towns web site all royalex models are removed, but not really replaced with any other materials. I also noticed they removed their wood models. So now the only Old Town canoes are poly. But I wonder why they dont offer any composites?

    pros/cons webbed seats

On another forum, someone commented that you can get an itchy butt or even a rash from webbed seats. Anyone have any issues?
