Winter projects

No winter projects for me because we moved in August and my woodworking and metalworking equipment is in storage. The new place doesn't have the room or 240V power for my machines. Our contractor just left and he'll be starting my 40x60' shop in mid-February. It's frustrating not having access to my equipment but I bought a 3D printer a couple weeks ago. Since the barn build won't start for a couple of months we're going to head to Florida in the RV towing a car with our boats on top. My wife paddles a kayak and a double bladed paddle doesn't lend itself to the narrow mangrove tunnels. She ends up breaking down the paddle and using half as a canoe paddle so I 3D printed her a handle this morning.

Winter projects up here include things like, refurbishing a 40yr old wooden warped/weathered snowboard. Because.. well… It seems normal to me. Every winter I go through my gear and remove, clean or replace what’s needed. I picked up a pair of vintage bikes this past summer (awesome components) that I’ll run through and get everything going smoothly again.
And there’s always the random house tasks, paint touch ups, new shelving, repaint the inside doors, etc.

Teaching emotionally challenged kids to ride horses is the most important thing I do in the winter. Sometimes the weather is terrible. We have an indoor arena we can use, but bad footing is not very safe, so we sometimes cancel classes. We have some social events and fund raisers associated with the barn. We have training sessions to get all the instructors up to speed. I can't tell who has more fun, the kids, the horses or me.

This one has been on the list for a bit, got it together last night.

Not the prettiest project ever, but it was partly a proof-of-concept. Like any wood-bodied plane, it will probably be a little finicky to get tuned in, but it is capable of doing this:

Granted, I probably could do a beveled rabbet with the tablesaw molding head, but can I do a winding bevel with that? No.

Now, why would I want to be able to do something like that? (-:

I don't have much of any winter project/s going on this year. I usually do.
Sometimes it's customizing .22 rifles (did enough of that), sometimes cruising thrift stores for good quality but abused chef knives to refinish/fix to give away to aspiring chefs and home chefs who could use quality cutlery.
Everything on my home, shop and new BBQ hut off the patio is done.
So I've been updating my paddling/camping places because a lot of them went from "FCFS" to reservable.
So I'm re-reading rules across northern WI, the UP and MN and also finding places where I can still just leave on a whim for 2-3 days at a time to get away when I have some spare time.

Got a busy winter ahead of me, mostly work related. After years of asking, I finally got a dedicated canoe building course for the high school kids. It's being offered as a math class, but the focus is canoe building. After talking with the fellas in the Outers club, we are going to make a 17 foot prospector type and a big 20 footer, to be used mostly on fall trips. There is a local Indigenous sawmill just outside of Beardmore that donated around 500 board feet of cedar, picked it up last week, finished thickness planing it on Friday.

Building two new strong backs, should be starting production at the end of January. Here's a pick of the solo we started last year, it will have to be finished as well. Couple of more fill coats, then the rest should go quickly.

We are also involved in a unique initiative to build Tiny homes for the local Indigenous reserves. My afternoons have two classes, with Indigenous kids learning how to build a house. I've got a construction fella who leads up the build, and the kids also receive a bunch of industry training. It's a pretty special thing, really enjoying it. We are trying to get all the trusses and roof up this week, but the weather is not great, a big snow storm is expected Thursday as well. Here's a shot of the kids raising a wall.

Thought I would throw in a couple of shots of my birthday cake just for fun, my son's wife is quite the baker, and she went overboard with the cake this year.

Also the cupcakes and portage signs were quite delicious.

No time to get up to no good anymore, gonna be a busy winter.
I'm not sure what's more impressive. Building a canoe and homes as a math class project or that cake?

I immediately showed the photo of that cake to my wife and exclaimed, "Canoe believe that cake?!?"

What a fantastic idea for class. As a high school math teacher, I would love to embark on a class project like that but not sure it would work where I teach. Alas, I'm 50% happy for your students, 50% impressed at the deep learning opportunity you've created, and 50% jealous that I can't do it myself.
