Photos of Animals, Fish, Birds & Bugs on a Canoe Trip

An abandoned loon egg. it's a long story, but when I discovered it after it had obviously rolled out of a nest perched on a mud mound, I contacted the Adirondack Loon Conservancy and was told that if it had been there for two days or more, it would not be viable. I should collect it and freeze it and transport it to the Conservancy for chemical testing analysis, which I did. A sad year for us at the lake with no loon family after several successful loon family years.Egg down.jpeg

I listen for loons on lakes in the Sierra in the fall. We get a few stragglers off the main flyway. None this year and I was out plenty.
Maybe the best thing about the North Woods.

Here are some pictures of a family of loons, two adults and a juvenile, that I photographed while canoeing on Lower Togue Pond in Baxter State Park, Maine, at the end of September. They seemed hypervigilant because a pair of bald eagles kept close tabs on them.

a lake in Temagami I frequent used to have several family groups on it, spread about a mile (1.6km) apart on either shore, probably averaging a dozen groups annually- this year there was only a single male loon with no mate or chicks on the entire lake. This was early september when there should hve been dozens of chicks learning to fish and fly. I've seen the same trend almost everywhere I go
