When is a Canoe Not a Canoe?

I build a fair amount of furniture and the “shop skills” acquired from building and repairing wood canoes with hand tools have only helped. I find myself using power tools less and less and my joinery is better for it. My mistakes happen slower too.

I unfortunately missed the event this year, it’s only about a half hour away. I was dealing with the extraordinary weather event we had, while no pipe froze I did pull an all nighter making sure they didn’t.
In the what else have I done category, I’ve built a toboggan, a dog sled, a DN ice boat, wooden boatwork in general from a 10’ canoe to a 200’ mega yacht and lastly a replica of the car from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Now I’m working on the house and barn so I can get back to canoes, top of the list is a Rushton Indian Girl sailing canoe.

Not my skills and not carpentry, but Placid Boatworks, the maker of infused pack canoes, also makes the seat pods for Olympic luge sleds.

When I retired at 62 in 2010, I built a pole barn with mostly lumber I cut and milled from my property. I did everything myself except the roof rafters.

There is a long tradition of Canadian canoe builders making toboggans, skis, and other sports equipment as shown below on page 35 of the 1927 Peterborough Canoe Company catalog. The rest of the catalog is available at the link below.

My main canoe tripping buddy is a retired mechanical engineer who taught himself wood working skills. When he had his house built about 25 years ago he had the third garage stall built as a separate wood shop. In it he built several high quality strippers and a very nice wannigan which I want him to build me one of. When he got divorced he kept the house and his wife took much of the furniture so he built a dinner room set with a hutch, living room furniture and breakfast nook table and chairs. All of this very well crafted in high quality wood. Over the past five years he has gotten into wine making and built most his own equipment to process his home grown grapes.
