Time to throw in the towel

I have been working on these two canoes for quite awhile but it’s time to admit my canoe restoration days are over. Between health and age I just don’t have it anymore so I’m bringing them over to a canoe shop to get some work done that I’m not comfortable with, then I’ll finish them off with paint and minor items afterwards
That dark blue one is a 100 year old JR Robinson I bought off of Yellowcanoe years ago, it just needs “closed gunnels” installed, I’ve never done closed before, old dogs, new trick thing.
The bare canoe is an early Chestnut (100 years old, only Chestnut I ever saw with tumblehome). I bought it years ago in New Brunswick, Ca, it needs to have some planking I did replaced, tacks tightened and a canvas. I’ll fill and paint the canvas when I get it back, along with new gunnels and stem bands. I’m still comfortable doing that.
My daughter helped me load them, now it’s off for my afternoon nap.

Years ago when I took my son to undergrad school at the University of Vermont we would see lots of cars with boats on top. The family joke about any such vehicle became, “ they’re havin’ fun”. So, I guess you’re still having fun!

Sorry that you're not up to all the restoration work, but it's great that you're getting some help with it instead of leaving them undone.

Yes Gerald, our trips together were so much enjoyment for me. Your stories of past trips and life experiences were true Canadian vintage, something I have loved hearing since I was a small boy when I spent summers in Canada.
I’m thankful I have many pictures to view as I reminisce.

Can't wait to see your canoe done. They're great looking canoes. I think with age we all learn to change our expectations. I keep enjoying your videos and would surely enjoy reading stories and watching videos from you and Gerald as I'm confident you still have plenty of footages and stories you could share.

Thanks for the kind words, very much appreciated.

I dropped the canoes off and it sure was nice to be in a canoe shop again, the smell of cedar and varnish really let you know where you are. He had a couple of works in progress and more stored in the wings. Luckily, mine found indoor storage.
And of course all the memorabilia hung on the wall, to some just old stuff but for us old wood canvas guys a treasure trove of interesting items.
Now the wait.

Robin - If nothing else, keep the shop open and go out and enjoy a cup of coffee there a couple of times each week. Relax in a good chair and soak in the atmosphere. It will keep those good memories alive and might even inspire you to continue, albeit, with smaller projects.
