Here's a picture of a thwart I'd like to be able to use in a canoe restoration. My first thought was to drill out the hole and glue in a dowel, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe cut out a rectangle instead? Any ideas?

That is how I fix them, I cut a slot into the end and epoxy a pice of hard wood with the grain running perpendicular to the thwart's grain, it will be way better than new!!

Square peg it is. Thanks! The horizontal splice is a good idea too, but might be overkill for this repair.

I like that horizontal splice. Otherwise, I'd probably put in a small dovetail/keystone piece, instead of a square plug. But yeah, that's probably overkill, too.
