I've been watching the weather for the Adirondacks trying to guess when I'll have open water. So far things have been going as usual but then I got this surprise. The Adirondack Daily Enterprise newspaper reported on April 9 Saranac Lake had a new record low temperature. It had a recorder temperature of -3F. Looks like ice out will take a little longer.

Guessing when a lake will have open water is notoriously difficult. The chart below shows some ice out dates for Cold Stream Pond in central Maine from 1950 to a few years ago. The green line shows the rolling ten year average. The r square value for this data set is .074 which is a very low correlation. Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire has ice out data back to 1887 and their r square value is .054 for example. This is not an exact science. Good luck,

I drove state route 3 from Harrisville to Saranac Lake on Sunday. Cranberry Lake was wide open as far as I could see when I passed through. Piercefield flow was also open. First and second pond on the Saranac River were open, Lower Saranac lake still had ice on the main lake, and Lake Flower in town was open as far as I could see. I rode my bike yesterday past Lake Colby and the main lake was open with a bit of ice in the back bays. Moody pond near my house is open as well.

A friend of mine is the director of Cortland's outdoor education facility on Raquette Lake. Last Sunday she was still able to walk the mile across from Pine Knot Point to the facility at Antlers. As of Wednesday, the channel was open and they were motoring across the lake again; although she did say some of the more protected coves still had ice on them.

About 9 years ago I watched the weather and lucked out with some nice early April weather up at Lows Lake in the Adirondacks. The gate was still closed so I wheeled my way in to the put in. I was rewarded with some beautiful weather, although it did get down into the mid 20’s at night.

Ice out trips are great, no bugs and no crowds. Just bring your winter clothes to stay comfortable.

Some claim that the fishing is best just after Ice out.
