Georgia is a great paddling state, as is much of the South. I paddled whitewater in north Georgia a long time ago and around the coast of Jekyll Island.

Welcome. I’d like to hear more about the week long flat water trips, if you are so inclined.

Glenn,
Thank you for the info. Sounds like we have some paddling in common. Our family lived on Jekyll for 3-4 years when I was a kid. Canoeing all of the Georgia coast is on my big dream list but my paddling buddies are lack luster on the idea.

Erica,
Thank you. I absolutely love multiday flat-water trips. Slow water, friends, my hound dog, big meals and camp comfort. I spent a lot of time on the Altamaha River growing up and still do a yearly weeklong trip there. Though its only 138 miles it can be combined with either the Ocmulgee or Oconee for bigger miles. Ive also done Suwanee, Ohoopee into Altamaha, Little and Big Satilla in weeklong trips.

Thanks!

I’m paddled many times the upper Suwannee River. Below White Springs, it gets crowded with motor boats.

What’s the motorized traffic on the Altamaha and the others you mention?

Erica,
In south Georgia I tend to paddle in the winter. For peace and quiet I really prefer February trips. Usually by then duck season is over and boat traffic is very limited on the big rivers Altamaha, Oconee, Ocmulgee. What boats are present then tend to be shad fishermen and they are very respectful. . I have done trips during warm weather and it comes with increased boat traffic and generally a rowdier crowd. Some of the smaller rivers boat traffic can be almost entirely avoided by paddling during low water
