I'm a relentless dreamer. I've got all kinds of things I want to do but don't have the time, money and space to do it.I'm a year out from graduating law school. I have an internship that will likely lead to a job.

At some point over the next few years I think I'll be looking for a new challenge.

What books can you recommend about how to get into wood/canvas canoe building and restoration?

For building and restoring there is "The Wood and Canvas Canoe" by Jerry Stelmok and Rollin Thurlow.

For just restoration, "This Old Canoe" by Mike Elliot.

These two books cover just about everything you need to know, the formula for DIY canvas filler in This Old Canoe saves you the price of the book.

In addition to the books Robin mentioned, I like, "Building the Maine Guide Canoe", by Stelmok. It is very detailed.

Please consider joining the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association. There is a very active west coast contingent. The Forums are a great source of information too.

Not to SWAY you from a wood canvas build!
But if a Cedar stripper might be considered, Nick Schade, of Guillemont Kayaks, has some Outstanding videos and instruction in the building process !
Nicks videos are free on Youtube, and I highly recommend watching and subscribing !

No, I would definitely consider a cedar stripper - and indeed already have Canoecraft. There's just something about a wood canvas that really appeals to me.

Thanks for all your recommendations folks and keep them coming.

Too bad you are so far away I would give you a form for Rollin Thurlow's Atkinson Traveler. It is still looking for a home. Denise seems to be mia after she said she would take it.
