I feel like I have been debating between these shoes for years now - with the REI sale this week I think I am going to splurge on one of them - but I simply cannot decide which. It seems a bit like the Astral TR1 Merge 2.0 is ideal for the portage portions of a trip, but the Astral Rassler 2.0 is perhaps a bit better in the water (but also is great on a portage). Would LOVE to hear thoughts about and experiences with these two shoes, especially for those that wet-foot in places like Algonquin and Temagami.

How much kneeling do you do? If it's frequently and/or for extended periods of time the Rassler 2.0 might be best

I had not considered that - I do mainly kneel. I also have a tendency to roll my ankle at times, which means I usually prefer hikers for portaging. I wet foot now using Merrill Moab III ventilated boots. They are not designed to be water shoes, but as they are not waterproof they work just fine. But I wonder whether I would appreciate the quick-drying nature of the Astrals...

A friend of mine was wearing the Rasslers on the Grand Ronde last week and they looked great to me. I think I will get a pair.

Regarding other Astral's: I have now had two pairs of Brewers, the first generation and the 2.0. I can't wear them for more than a day or two on the river because my feet get a little beat up and need relief (at least without socks), because the water-resistant materials are not soft on skin, and the friction gets to me after a day or two. The other issue that I have had is that the toe box eventually separates from the sole. I've fixed it with 5200 Marine Adhesive both times with success, but they're not exactly bombproof.

By observation and comparison, the Rasslers seem like an improvement on both fronts.
